A DJ is the main person responsible for the vibe at a party. With the right setup and correct equipment, the possibilities of what a DJ can achieve are endless. If you are wondering how to get your hands on the right DJ setup for you, here are some basic and useful tips.
Your research
Before buying any equipment, carry out your personal research. Watch all the DJs closely at work; if you get the chance ask questions. You’d be surprised how much other DJs are willing to help out beginner DJs. Research on the web and read up all you can about the different equipment options available.
Your equipment
The DJ equipment you need to begin with includes X2 input devices, which can be Turntables or CD decks (or a combination of the two), a 2 channel mixer, some speakers and headphones.
The vinyl turntable was the most popular and commonly used turntable a while back but with the advent of newer technologies, CD decks are definitely the way forward for beginner DJs today.
The mixer is the heart of your dj setup so it’s advised that you get a good one for your purpose. When it comes time to choose a mixer my main piece of advice is; DON’T choose a mixer based on how many buttons or controls it has, a simple yet high quality 2 channel mixer such as a Pioneer when starting out is perfect.
A mixer with a crossfader allows you to move back and forth between two turntables, it offers a second option to the individual channel volume controls. Getting a mixer with more than 2 channels in the beginning unless you have 2 turntables and 2 CD decks isn’t necessary.
You can’t DJ without headphones; in your headphones is where you hear the upcoming track and beatmatch accordingly for your next mix. Getting one with a good frequency range is critical, 20 Hz-20 KHz, is around where you want to be. Get a set that wraps snugly around your ears and are comfortable.
Speakers for your home dj setup are important considering this is where you are going to spend most of your time mixing, particularly in the beginning when you are learning how to DJ; choose speakers that offer clarity and crisp warm sound.
DJ setup words of caution
Let your beginning be a humble one. Don’t go for all those huge and expensive professional set ups because you have seen others using them; remember you are in the early stages of learning how to become a DJ.
Don’t buy something unless you are absolutely sure you are going to get the most out of it; you don’t want to waste your money having to buy twice, there is nothing more annoying!
Never purchase equipment on an impulse; chances are you will end up with something you will have no use for. Do your research!
Now that you know how to go about putting together your first DJ Setup, it’s time to get cracking!
Once your setup and ready to never stop learning and never stop practicing, if you don’t I guarantee learning how to become a DJ will be one of the best things you ever learn how to do.
